You see, funky does not indicate a color and sadly, funky is not a pattern. Believe me when I tell you that my work would be a breeze if it was that simple. Loosely defined, funky in the mind of a tween or teen girl is the latest, cool thing. And that could be anything from polka dots to zebra stripes and all points in between depending on the time of day as decorating trends change with lightning speed especially with young girls.
At this point in the consultation, before I start showing off my portfolio of funky bedroom decorating ideas that have been well received in the past, I do a little detective work to ascertain what mental images my teenage client associates with funky bedding sets and decor.
If I’ve learned one thing from the process it’s that teenagers decorate their bedrooms as a group. One girl in the clique or club generally sets the pace for funky bedding for girls. In the past several months, the Twilight New Moon bedding sets have been very popular followed closely by zebra bedding and peace sign bedding sets. The closer we get to the spring and summer months, I expect pastel stripes and paisley patterns to surface once again. And it will be interesting to see if polka dot bedrooms have some life left.
WHERE TO SHOP FOR FUNKY BEDDING and DECOR
Depending on whether your budget calls for cheap, bed in a bag sets or if there’s money on tap for more expensive designer sets will determine where you load your shopping cart with bed linens. If forced to name a favorite place to shop for funky bedroom decorating ideas that are colorful and trendy, Anthropologie would be at the top of the list. When looking for cheap, but quality bedding and decorations EBay is the place to go.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The truth is that a savvy decorator can take practically any color or theme and make it funky. The key to a happy client is to allow them to tell YOU just how funky they want their bedroom to be and to have this information available before shopping for funky bedding sets for the girl or adults that you are working for. After all, a successful bedroom design is indicated by a happy client.
